2010 Audi S4

Back in 2004, when the S4 introduced the entry-level luxury-car segment to V-8 power, it was named a 10Best Car. Fast-forward six years. The all-new S4 lost a couple of cylinders but packs a silky, 333-hp supercharged V-6 (it makes just seven fewer horses than the old V-8 did) and might be the most controversial car on this year’s list.
The purists on staff contend that four-wheel drive has no place in a sports car (or a sedan trying its hardest to be one), and they also believe that the 3-series (including the ass-kicking M3) is a better all-around array when compared with the A4 lineup. They are right on one count: The 3-series is a better all-around array. But the S4 stands apart from the A4 line like a narc at a Dead show, and the rest of our staff can’t deny its capabilities. They outnumber the purists.
And capable it is. The S4 recently knocked off the blue-chip BMW 335i in a head-to-head comparison test [November 2009] despite producing practically identical performance numbers and weighing nearly 400 pounds more. The car exhibits a relatively high amount of understeer unless fitted with the optional (and by our standards essential) $1100 torque-vectoring rear differential, which transforms the S4 into an oversteering hoon. Suffice it to say, the fun-to-drive quotient grows, too.
Practicality is also on the S4’s side. Exceptional ergonomics, good comfort (especially in the rear seat), and class-leading styling round out its winning package.

10 Best Cars for Older Drivers

iStockphoto
Sooner or later, comfort enters into the car equation. Whether you're 50, 60, or 70, you may start thinking about a vehicle that can conform to your chassis, instead of the other way around.

To find our top picks for older drivers, we took a tip from Goldilocks -- a car must be neither too big nor too small. Small cars tend to be low to the ground and often don’t have the room a more mature torso needs.

Big vehicles often involve a step up to get in. So we looked for medium-height cars and smaller SUVs and mini-vans with easy entrance and egress. To customize your ride we insisted on a tilt -- and, ideally, telescoping -- steering wheel. An adjustable-height driver’s seat was also required. Bonus points for heated seats, lumbar support and adjustable pedals; if the passenger seat adjusts as well, even better.

Visibility is also key (why crane your neck?), and several of our picks have backup cameras and reverse sensing systems to aid you. Plus, some have options for high-tech safety features, such as blind-spot and lane-departure warnings. Though these options are pricey, none tips a car’s price over $60,000.

Check out our ten best car picks for older drivers, and let us know which is your favorite by leaving a comment below.

Best Cars for $20K

Times are tough, and money’s scarce. You’ve probably noticed this. So even though perilous economic times haven’t deterred us from our basic mission—a relentless search for automotive entertainment—we recognize a need for providing suggestions that can get you into one of our favorite cars at a low cost. Or perhaps even get you into a car you previously thought unattainable.
Beyond its smell, a new car is alluring because (a) like marrying a virgin, its particular charms and secrets have presumably been known to no other and (b) its problems, if any, will be corrected at no cost to you.
You obviously forgo both those advantages, at least to some extent, with a used car, and you’re never entirely sure how that ride has been treated by its former owner. Love? Abuse? Indifference?
On the other hand, the realm of the previously owned avoids that big first-year-depreciation hit and provides access to cars that may lie beyond your economic reach when new. A new Porsche Boxster, for example, the most affordable of all Porsches, carries a base price of $47,395. Affordable and $47,395 make uneasy allies in the best of times but are particularly hard to reconcile when your 401k is at periscope depth and shows no signs of resurfacing anytime soon.
So with finance in mind, we’re revisiting a C/D public service initiated last year [“The $25,000 Question,” October 2008]. The basic premise is the same—the most desirable used cars at affordable prices—but in recognition of tight money, we’ve lowered the price ceiling by five grand.
Beyond that, our approach was the same. We developed a list of potential cars, using Kelley Blue Book prices as a guideline, then chased down specific examples via www.autotrader.com or car clubs. We invited the owners to join us for a day at GingerMan Raceway in western Michigan—so trusting, these guys—then spent the day driving their cars around the circuit and on nearby public roads. As with the inaugural derby, we added two of our favorite new cars to the mix, this time a Mazda 3 and a Mini Cooper, each available for less than $20,000.
Unlike last year’s roundup, we didn’t attempt to rate the cars. Entertainment—always a top priority at Casa C/D—was the guiding selection factor. Which one appeals to you is a matter of your personal priorities. That’s why our group again ranges from a purist’s sports car such as the Honda S2000 to an SUV such as the Chevy TrailBlazer SS, where fun manifests itself in different ways. Always nice to have choices.

WOW!!!!

Pics Aplenty: Lamborghini Gallardo LP550-2 Valentino Balboni gets its launch on

Autoblog friend David Kaiser, the same man who brought us images of the Tramontana F1 in full jet fighter camouflage regalia, has struck again with stunning pictures from Lamborghini's launch of the Gallardo LP550-2 Valentino Balboni in Zürich, Switzerland. According to Kaiser, this was the third stop of the car's initial European tour following appearances in Paris and Lyon in France. Next, the Italian crew will pack up and take their show on to various locations in the United Kingdom.

In case you your memory needs refreshed, the new Lambo was named in honor of the automaker's longtime test driver. Featuring a 550-horsepower version of the Gallardo's familiar V10 engine and a comparatively low 3,042-pound curb weight, the rear-drive LP550-2 is reportedly capable of scurrying to 60 in just 3.9 seconds and up to a top speed of 199 mph. Check out the photo gallery below and pay special attention to the unique black-and-white racing stripe, Scorpious wheels hiding bright yellow brake calipers and transparent engine cover. Thanks, David!

2012 Gumpert Apollo

Street Legal
This feature alone will surely bring a jaw-dropping experience for people who will see this car in motion. Hailing from Gumpert, one of the best car manufacturers around the world, the Apollo Enraged has been designed for street racing.
It was featured at the 82nd Geneva International Motor Show and it has since received a huge audience. The car's brute thrust goes up to 780 horsepower which is definitely saying something.
The griffin is Gumpert's mythical animal logo and is beautifully brandished in the car's distinctive swing doors. This high speed car is street legal which basically means that the Apollo Enraged has everything that a car needs and nothing that this car can't have.
Having a street legal car like the Gumpert Apollo does not mean it does not have any racing feature. It still adapts the same system and function just like Gumpert's Apollo R. Pure German speed is Gumpert's motto in the creation of this fantastic vehicle. A lot of people may have called it an extreme car but nevertheless it boasts of a grand time for people who live for speed.
